Politics
I dont have much to say since Tim has said most of it and much betterer than i ever could. I would like to comment about one thing that Brad said that I feel qualified to respond to.
My first problem is that the Policy bush took on stem cells is jsut a cop out. He is against destroying a potential child but its okay to keep the stem cells goign that have already doen this? if you are agianst it, be aginast it totally. if its not okay to do this at all then why allow anything attained in this way be allowed to be studied? this is not as big a deal to me as my next point.
yes Bush did set aside the already existing stem cell populations for federal funding of stem cell research. AND private funding can still take place for stem cell research. great. but this ignores a few important facts. there is very little research done in this ocuntry without federal funding. Additionaly, the stemm cell populations set aside (about sixty i htink) were prepared using mice and since then methods have been developed to do this in human culture. this is better. Even more importantly, the most hopeful applications of stem cells is to be able to create transplants for people with diseases or injuries. these transplants will not take if the stem cell populations are not a fairly good match to the donor in terms of blood type and other immunological factors. as a result the sixty or so useable stem cell populations are not actually that useful in this respect becasue there is absolutely no way that sixty populations of stem cells could provide the variability neccessary to make such a system useful for a large majority of the population. furthermore Bush is jsut retarding the scientific advancement of the United States in terms of stem cells. this economically retarded because it will aloow other countires to advance stem cell technology while we sit on our asses. allright, i htink thats the end of my rant. i hope i made sense.
Stem Cells. I think Bush gets somewhat of a bad rap on this, since he didn't completely ban the embryonic stem cell research, but any restrictions on the research seems pretty silly to me.
